Situado en el Norte de West Bengal, Coochbehar es de verdad una ventana a los estados del este lejano de India. Para viajar a los estados nor-este de la India, uno tiene que pasar por el pequeño pueblo de Coochbehar. Mientras que el distrito de Jalpaiguri está en el norte y el estado de Assam en el este, Coochbehar tiene frontera internacional con Bangladesh en el sur. Los territorios de Coochbehar y Bhutan eran parte del gran Reino de Kamrup. Con la desintegración de este reino, se nacieron muchas principalidades pequeñas y un nuevo reino fue construido por los Koches. Hasta entonces se llamaba a este estado Kamta. Era durante el período de Maharaja Viswa Singh y su hijo Maharaja Naranarayan que se cambió el nombre a Coochbehar que significa donde la gente Koch vive. La actual Maharani de Jaipur, Gayatri Devi era princesa de este estado real.La ciudad tiene en su medio un lago grande y magnífico llamado el Sagar Dighi y los edificios administrativos rodean esta estructura antigua. La ciudad fue especialmente diseñada con calles bien planificadas y lagos por un arquitecto francés en el medio siglo 19 y es quizás la primera ciudad planificada de la India.

One of the most famous princely states of the Royal India, Coochbehar still carries the remnants of its past. A well architected city, it has a great history behind it and beautiful greenery surrounding it. The history of Coochbehar dates back to the period of the Pala and Sena of the 11th and 12th century AD. The territories of Coochbehar and Bhutan were part of the great Kingdom of Kamrup. When this kingdom broke up, many petty principalities were born and a fresh kingdom was built by the Koches. Till then this state was known as Kamta. It was during the period of Maharaja Viswa Singh and his son Maharaja Naranarayan that the name was changed to Coochbehar meaning, where the Koch people dwell. The present Maharani of Jaipur, Gayatri Devi was the princess of this princely state.\r\nThe city centers around a huge beautiful lake called the Sagar Dighi and the administrative blocks surround this old structure. The city was specially designed with well laid roads and lakes by a French architect in the mid 19th century and is perhaps the first planned city of India.
