Culture Of Karnataka - PI-0267

Karnataka is a state of rich heritage, ancient lineages and diverse languages. Its ethnic grandness is fortified by the embossments of various rulers who have ruled the place in addition to its huge ambit of festivals, music and royal cuisine. Home to various tribes, the place is also home to the famous rock edicts of King Ashoka that epitomize the aestheticism and regal artistry of the place.

Day 1: Mumbai

Arrive Mumbai international airport and transfer to hotel for overnight stay.Mumbai Once a tiny island covered by palm trees was used to belong to the native koli fisher-folk, who still live here in their little villages surrounded by huge skyscrapers. In the seventeenth century the Portuguese came and dotted the island with several forts, which stand even today. In 1661, Mumbai was finally ceded to Charles II of England and eventually became one the largest ports in the British Empire.

After breakfast sightseeing of Elephanta caves, located on an island about 10 Kms away from the Gateway of India. Reach the Island by Motor Boat. These caves consist of temples carved from rock which date back to the 7th century. Afternoon take a city tour of Mumbai visiting, Prince of Wales Museum, Hanging Gardens & Gateway of India.Overnight stay at hotel.

Morning after breakfast leave for Bijapur(160 Kms/3-4 Hrs). Check into the hotel. Later leave for a tour of Bijapur visit, Mohammad Adil Shah built Bijapur during the 17th century. Visit the Gol Gumbaz or the round dome. This structure has the largest dome unsupported by pillars to be found in India and the second largest in the world. Later visit Ibrahim Roza, a beautiful tomb built by Adil Shah II for his queen.Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 6: Bijapur - Badami

Morning after breakfast in hotel leave for the early 6th century temples of Badami (132kms/3 hrs) en-route visit Aihole as the "cradle of Indian architecture", Aihole has over 100 temples scattered around the village. Arrive and check in to hotel. Later, a visit of Badamai to the rock cut caves, the Mahakuteshwara Temple and the Northern Fort. Overnight at Badami Court.

Morning after breakfast in hotel The capital of the early Chaulkyas, Badami is picturesquely situated at the mouth of a ravine between two rocky hills. Badami is famous for it's four cave temples. Leave for Hospet (240 kms/6hrs) and en-route stop at Pattadakal situated on the bank of the Malarapbha river and has ten major temples representing early Chalukyan architecture. Overnight at Hospet.

After breakfast in hotel, A base to take a tour of Hampi or Vijayanagara (1 hrs drive) one of the largest empires in the history of India- in ruins.Hampi is identified with the historical Kishkindha, the Vanara (monkey) kingdom mentioned in the Ramayana. The first historical settlements in Hampi date back to 1 CE.
 
 
Hampi formed one of the cores of the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1336 to 1565, when it was finally laid siege to by the Deccan Muslim confederacy.[1] Hampi was chosen because of its strategic location, bounded by the torrential Tungabhadra river on one side and surrounded by defensible hills on the other three sides.
 
 
The site is significant historically and architecturally. The topography abounds with large stones which have been utilized to make larger than life statues of Hindu deities. A structure of historic importance appears every quarter of a mile. The Archaeological Survey of India continues to conduct excavations in the area, to discover additional artifacts and temples
 
Explore the ruined kingdom and return back to Hospet for overnight stay.

Day 9: Hospet - Hassan

After breakfast leave for Hassan.Though an important archeological site in itself, Hassan is more popularly known as a convenient base to the architectural ans sculptural wonders of Belur, Halebid and Sravanabelagola. The Hoysala rule between 11th to 13th centuries has left a profound impact on the architectural and cultural legacy of the region and it was during this time that most of the legendary and renowned temples of Belur and Halebid were constructed. Very near to one of the biggest Jain pilgrimage centres of India, Sravanabelagola, Hassan has been deeply influenced by Jainism and Jain philosophy and mythology can readily be seen in the sculptures, paintings and literary works of the region.
 
 
Hassan itself was once a well-known centre of Jain literature. It has retained the aura of serenity and peace and situated in the heart of Malnad district of Karnataka. The nearby excursion point of Sravanabelagola features one of the world's tallest and loveliest monolith statues of Lord Gomateshwara or Lord Bahubali, a Jain saint. Belur being the capital of the Hoysala kings has the most remarkable monuments including Chennakeshava temple that took 103 years to complete and Veeranarayana temple. Halebid looks like a twin city to Belur when it comes to the rich architecture of Karnataka.

Day 10: Hassan - Mysore

After breakfast sightseeing of Belur and Halebid.Belur and Halebid, are more of twin hamlets having many things in common between them. Both together complete the full square of the Hoysala temples along with Hampi and Hassan. Both have exquisite ancient temples built by the Hoysala dynasty and have at one point of the time been the capital city of the Hoysala dynasty.
 
 
Belur and Halebid are the twin towns which are located in the Hassan district of the Indian state of Karnataka. These twin towns houses among some of the most finely casted Temples built during the Hoysala empire. Belur is situated at the distance of 222 Km from Bangalore-the capital city of Karnataka state and Halebid is another 16 Km away. These Temple towns of Karnataka are well connected via Rail and Road. The famous tourist attractions here are the temples showcasing the outstanding work of art. After that later leave for Mysore, arrive Mysore and check in to hotel for overnight in hotel.

After breakfast in hotel sightseeing of Mysore visiting Tipu Sultan Palace and Somnathpur.The name Mysore is an anglicised version of Mahishuru, which means the abode of Mahisha. Mahisha stands for Mahishasura, a demon from Hindu mythology. The city is spread across an area of 128.42 km2 (50 sq mi) and is situated at the base of the Chamundi Hills.
 
 
Mysore is famous for the festivities that take place during the Dasara festival when the city receives a large number of tourists. Mysore also lends its name to the Mysore mallige, Mysore style of painting, the sweet dish Mysore Pak, Mysore Peta (traditional silk turban) and the garment called the Mysore silk saree. In an exercise carried out by the Urban Development Ministry under the national urban sanitation policy, Mysore was rated the second cleanest city in India in 2010 and the most cleanest in Karnataka
