Según la mitología hindú, la esposa del Señor Shiva, Sati fue sin invitación a su padre. Fue insultada inmensamente y en ira se quemó a sí misma. Al enterar de la muerte de su esposa, Shiva empezó a hacer el Tandava Nritya, el baile devastador sujetando al cadáver de Sati en sus hombros. Con el progreso del baile los tres mundos empezaron a temblar hacia la destrucción. Para salvar el cosmos de aniquilación, el Señor Vishnu lanzó su disco hacia el cadáver.
