Era el sueño del nacionalista Madan Mohan Malviya a establecer una Universidad Hindú en la sagrada ciudad de Varanasi que consiguió el apoyo y el entusiasmo de los renombrados luchadores para la independencia y el patrocinio de los ricos hindúes de todo el país. La Universidad anteriormente se dedicaba primariamente para los estudios de la Cultura India y el Sánscrito hoy día se ha diversificado y se ha convertido en uno de los primeros institutos educacionales de la India.
