Es la más antigua iglesia construida por los europeos en la India. En su 3a visita a Kerala, Vasco de Gama, el comerciante portugués quien llegó a la India desde Europa por mar, se enfermó y murió en Kochi. Estaba enterrado en la Iglesia St. Francis. Luego sus restos eran llevados a Portugal. A pesar de esto el sitio exacto donde estaba enterrado ha sido preservado fuera de esta bonita iglesia.
