La Basilica Cátedra San Thome

Description:
San Thome en el extremo sur de Marina deriva su nombre de San Tomás, el apóstol de Cristo que se cree que llegó a Madras alrededor de 52 AD. Fue asesinado en el Monte St Thomas fuera de la ciudad en 78 AD y fue enterrado en la playa San Thome donde luego se construyó una iglesia. Muchos años más tarde, se construyeron otra iglesia más en el interior y sus restos mortales fueron transferidos de la iglesia vieja al nuevo. En 1606 la iglesia fue reconstruida como una cátedra y en 1896 fue denominado basílica. La magnífica vidriera de colores en la basílica representan el cuento de San Tomas y la sala central tiene 14 placas representando escenas de los últimos días de Cristo. En la cátedra hay una estatua de 3 pies altura de la Virgen María, que se cree que fue traído desde Portugal en 1543.
