Jorhat o Jorehaut quiere decir dos hats o mercados Macharhat y Chowkihat que existieron en las dos distintas orillas del río Bhogdoi durante el siglo 18. Jorhat era la última capital del reino Ahom. En el año 1794 el rey Ahom Gaurinath mudó su capital desde Sibsagar (anterior Rangpur) a Jorhat.
