A la parte norteña de Nashik se conoce como Panchavati y tiene el Río Godavari fluyendo por allí. Hay cinco árboles de Banyan (Vat) y por eso se llama al área Panchavati.
Se cree que el Señor Shri Ram y Sita junto con Lakshman vivían en Panchavati por algún tiempo. De hecho era aquí que Sita vio al ciervo de oro y fue secuestrada por el rey demonio Ravan. La gente cree que fue raptada desde la Sita Gumpha. Esta es una pequeña cueva debajo de un árbol de banyan. Se puede entrar en la cueva con una estrecha escalera. La cueva tiene el ídolo del Shree Ram, Lakshman y Sita. Por eso Panchavati consiguió mucha importancia.
