La pequeña ciudad de Kaushambi está a unos 185 kms de la sagrada ciudad de Varanasi. Kaushambi es también una anciana ciudad y ha sido mencionada en la épica de Mahabharata. Se dice que los Pandavas vivían aquí por algún tiempo. La ciudad reconsiguió su importancia cuando el Señor Buda llegó allí para predicar sus sermones. Las ruinas de una antiguo fuerte dicen de la importancia de la cuidad.
