Situadas dentro del National Park, estas 109 cuevas budistas son pruebas de la existencia de los asentamientos monásticos en los siglos 2 hasta el siglo 9 AD. Hay una colección variada de Viharas y Chaityas. Estas cuevas o monasterios budistas, donde los monjes practicaron sus penitencias son de acerca del primer siglo AD. Y muy distinto de la extravagancia artística de Elephanta, éstas son austeras y simples. De hecho, Kanheri es probablemente la única huella, para la subida y la caída del budismo en la India del oeste.
