Jaunpur está situado 65 km desde Varanasi. Era desarrollado por Feroz Shah en el siglo 14 quien también construyó un fuerte aquí para guardar al lado este del sultanado de Delhi. Jaunpur está cruzado por el río Gomati que se conecta por el famoso y masivo Puente Akbari. El puente construido en el siglo 16 ha sobrevivido los terremotos y las inundaciones de los últimos cinco siglos. El puente tiene quince arcos de piedra y en el final del puente hay una escultura de un león luchando con un elefante.
Esta pequeña ciudad tiene gran esplendor arquitectural con muchas mezquitas construidas en los siglos 14 y el 15. Las mezquitas construidas en un estilo muy único que es en parte islámico, en parte budista además de tener algunas influencias de la arquitectura jainista.
