El fuerte Chunar que está a unos 50 kms de la ciudad de Varanasi tiene una ubicación estratégica. Este fuerte histórico al lado del Río Ganges es un punto ventajoso ocupado desde épocas tempranas que se remontan a Vikramaditya de Ujjain 56 BC. El fuerte fue atacado y ocupado por Akbar y luego por los Nawabs de Awadh. Finalmente los ingleses lo capturaron en el siglo 18.
Chunar tiene fama por su arenisca y el material con que el gran emperador Mauryan Ashok construyó sus columnas.
