El museo gubernamental está ubicado en un edificio muy bonitamente tallado de piedra. Aunque se abrió al museo en el tarde siglo 19 por un inglés, fue mudado a su lugar actual en 1910. El museo exhibe a muchos artefactos que fueron descubiertos en Mathura por sí. Los artefactos cubren una gran gama de período desde el siglo 5 B.C. hasta el siglo 12 A.D. Las esculturas y monedas de este período que pertenecen a la gran dinastía Kushan y la época mauryana y la gupta han sido expuestas en este museo. Con los más impresionantes objetos, el museo quizás ofrece la mejor material disponible para el estudio de Arte e Iconografía de la India. Probablemente ningún otro museo se puede lucir de una mejor y más variada colección de material arqueológica de una única región.
