El antiguo fuerte que fue construido por Muhammad Tughlak en el siglo 14 para defenderle contra los bhils se queda como testigo a la rica historia de Surat.
En 1546, el Sultan de Gujarat construyó un castillo en Surat en las orillas del Tapi. Hoy en día, este sitio tiene muchas oficinas gubernamentales.
Se preservan todavía algunos restos del sultanado de Gujarat – la mezquita de Khawaja Diwan Saheb, la mezquita Khudavad y el Mariana Shami Maqbara. Todas dichas estructuras pertenecen al siglo 16, una prueba más de la evidencia de la prominencia del reino de los Mughals en la ciudad. La mezquita Swayed Idris también merece una visita.
