Este es uno de los más antiguos templos en la India del sur. Pertenece al siglo 8 AD y es un buen ejemplo de la primera fase de templos estructurales construidos en el estilo dravidiano.
El Templo de la costa está en un sitio muy extraordinario, al lado del margen de la Bahía de Bengala ya que cuando la marea está alta las hondas entran en ello y las paredes, con sus esculturas, han sido erosionadas por los vientos y las hondas de trece siglos.
