Este imponente fuerte está construido a unos 400m arriba las llanuras en las montañas Sahyadri. Con su rica herencia, Panhalgad tiene la perfecta ubicación. Era desde allí que Shivaji luchaba por más de cuatro meses, escapó una noche de lluvia a Vishalgad, mientras su general fiel Baji Prabhu Deshpande sacrificó su vida luchando contra las fuerzas de Sidi Johar en un paso muy estrecho, desde entonces llamado Pavankhind.
Acerca de 76 km noroeste de Kolhapur está Vishalgad, situado en una montaña. El camino pasa por densas selvas. El fuerte está separado por un hondo y estrecho río. Es un vasto fuerte como significa su nombre y sus inclinados percipios lo separan desde las tierras adjuntas, haciéndole casi imposible para conquistar. Hoy, la gente se conoce al fuerte como el sitio del Malik Raihan Dargah.
