Description:
Se dice que este lago era uno de los ojos verdes esmeraldas de la esposa de Shiva, Sati (naina en sánscrito significa ojo). Cuando el padre de Sati no invitó a Shiva para un sacrificio de la familia, se quemó a sí misma a muerte en protesta. Shiva escogió los restos quemados en sus brazos y empezó su baile cósmico, que estaba a punto de destruir al mundo. Para acabar al baile, Vishnu cortó al cadáver en muchos trozos, y los restos fueron tirados por toda la India. El moderno Templo Naina Devi en el extremo norte del lago está construido por el mismo sitio donde se cree que cayó el ojo.
