El Templo Nagaraja en Nagercoil

Description:
A unos 19-km desde Kannyakumari está Nagercoil, que tiene el renombrado templo Nagaraja. El sanctum es una simple cabaña de paja, con murallas de lodo. El ídolo principal es del Rey de Serpientes. Según la tradición el Rey de Kalakkad fue curado de su enfermedad de lepra cuando hizo sus penitencias en el templo. Luego lo reconstruyó en el estilo de Kerala. Puede haber sido este rey el Bhuthalavira Sri Vira Udaya Martehandavarma, quien gobernaba a Venad, con Kalakkad como su capital, desde 1516 hasta 1535. se cree que una mordedura de un serpiente no es mortal dentro de un kilómetro del templo. Además el templo tiene algunas esculturas jainistas.
