Era uno de los tempranos centros de actividad cristiana en Kerala. Se dice que el pueblo actual de Kollam fue construido por el comerciante de Siria - Sapir Iso, en el siglo 9 A.D. La popularidad de Kollam ha sido bien establecida por el dicho famoso que una vez que se ve a Kollam, no se querrá volver a su casa jamás. Kollam es un importante centro comercial e industrial. Es también la sede del Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation.
