Era la capital de los Hangal Kadambas, vasallos de los Chalukyas de Kalyana. Era mencionado como 'Panungal' en los archivos e identificado tradicionalmente con Viratanagara de la época de Mahabharatha. Estaba en la orilla izquierda del Río Dharma. El templo Tarakeshwara aquí es una gran estructura con una magnífica serie de imágenes y columnas pulidas altas Chalukyanas.
